Ultimate Software (Nasdaq: ULTI), a leading provider of human capital management (HCM) solutions in the cloud, announced today that West Fraser Mills, an integrated wood products company producing lumber, wood chips, laminated veneer lumber, medium-density fiberboard, plywood, pulp, and newsprint, has selected the UltiPro® solution for its comprehensive HCM functionality, business intelligence reporting, and flexible delivery options for training.
The firm was founded in 1955 and, more than five decades later, West Fraser Mills serves as the largest lumber producer in North America with over 8,000 employees spanning 40 locations in Canada and the United States.
Prior to selecting UltiPro in December 2014, West Fraser Mills had been using multiple solutions for payroll and handled HR and benefits processes manually. The company was challenged with four different solutions in Canada, as well as an additional system for the U.S. The company sought to consolidate all of its HR, payroll, and talent management activities, along with rich point-in-time reporting, through UltiPro’s HCM suite.
“One of the deciding factors for us was the breadth and depth of functionality UltiPro offers,” said Elaine Jensen, general manager of human resources for West Fraser Mills. “We’re pleased that UltiPro can bring all of our employee-centric processes and information onto a single, comprehensive platform. Our expectation is that, over the next 18 months, our company will see transformational benefits in terms of functionality and efficiency.”
Efficiency can be a challenge with a multi-national workforce that encompasses unions, hourly and salaried workers, and many locations. To address these needs, West Fraser Mills selected UltiPro for the solution’s robust payroll capabilities that can handle many complexities, while being flexible enough to accommodate a lumber producer’s unique business requirements. UltiPro’s comprehensive HR functionality puts every area of employee management, from recruitment to retirement, within one accessible platform for West Fraser Mills’ diverse, global staff.
With the company’s focus on a comprehensive HCM solution, workforce analytics also were a critical factor in West Fraser Mills’ decision to select UltiPro. Rather than relying on spreadsheets and re-keying data to develop reports and forecasts, West Fraser Mills will now be able to access a library of real-time reports that can be configured to specific preferences and delivered automatically to managers, and made available to executives on dashboards accessible from anywhere, at any time.
“In the manufacturing industry, you have to be able to adapt and change rapidly, and actionable information is a vital part of being agile. By using UltiPro’s dashboards and delivering analytics to managers, we hope to be able to be agile in managing change and have the ease of reporting in real-time at our fingertips,” said Jensen. “UltiPro will help us track and manage dynamics such as turnover, overtime, and overall performance, while helping us to better recruit and retain the best talent.”
To fully benefit from the rich data analytics UltiPro offers, it was important to West Fraser Mills that its Canadian and U.S. HR teams be knowledgeable on the full capabilities of UltiPro. With Ultimate’s range of free training options—from classroom training, virtual instructor-led training, and on-demand courses online—West Fraser Mills has the flexibility to select the delivery option that works best for each location.
“The flexibility to tailor training around the needs of our HR and payroll team has been a tremendous win for us,” stated Jensen.
“UltiPro is a great fit for global manufacturers like West Frasier Mills because companies can manage a complex, multi-state, multi-country manufacturing operation with a single, comprehensive solution,” said Greg Swick, chief sales officer at Ultimate Software. “We are proud to welcome West Fraser Mills to the Ultimate family and look forward to helping the company achieve its goals.”
