There is an article trending in my home town about a 5 – year old girl who dressed up like a Hot Dog on “Princess Day” at her dance studio. Why, do you ask, would she do this? My response is, why not? Why not challenge the status quo? When asked about her reasoning, her response was that she loves princesses, but wanted to be different. That simple statement led me to reflect on how this type of thinking and ideology would go a long way in the talent acquisition market.
Often, as recruiters and staffing consultants, we go about our day to day tasks, completing them just as we always have. When somebody asks, “why are you doing it this way?”, we respond, “because that is the way we have always done it.” Recruiting for top talent in the 21st century has evolved from what used to be a very reactive, tactical task, to one that involves a more pro-active approach, which includes networking, building relationships, and creating an inviting experience for candidates.
Any time I am working with a client that is implementing a new Talent Acquisition system, I try to encourage them to think outside the box. I question their motive for using the ‘lift and shift’ methodology. When implementing new software, it is the perfect time to also review your processes and workflows to see where improvements can be made.
What can you do differently to make things more efficient, or to make your company stand out in the crowded job marketplace? Here are a few things to consider:
- Take advantage of automation where it makes sense.
- Customize and brand your system to send a consistent message to internal and external users.
- Be an early adopter of new technology – this will make you seem like a leader in the industry!
- Never under-estimate the power of communication and training.
The next time you are tasked with making improvements, changing a process, or even implementing new software, I encourage you all to step outside of your comfort zone, challenge the status-quo, and be the Hot Dog at the Princess Party!
